The ACT Law Society is the peak body for legal practitioners in the ACT. The Society represents, advances, and defends the interests of an independent legal profession in the ACT. We also protect the public interest in the ACT system of justice through efficient regulation of the profession.

We are a small, dedicated, and supportive team of staff working with more than 3000 members across all parts of the legal profession in the ACT. The Society advocates for the profession with key stakeholders and provides a range of services for members, including providing information resources and guidance, and delivering a range of continuing professional development and networking activities throughout the year.

The ACT Law Society is the peak professional body for solicitors in the ACT and the local regulatory authority responsible for supporting professional standards and public confidence in the legal profession.

Reporting to the Director Engagement/Deputy CEO, you will:

  • Provide confidential ethics and practice guidance to solicitors and law practices
  • Assist practitioners to understand and apply their professional obligations
  • Develop and deliver education, CPD programs and practical resources
  • Support the work of the Society's Ethics Committe.
  • Identify emerging professional issues and trends affecting legal practice
  • Contribute to professional standards initiatives, policy development and law reform activities
  • Provide internal advice on the operation of the legal profession regulatory framework and related professional obligations

You will be an experienced legal practitioner with a strong understanding of professional responsibility and legal practice.

  • Admission as an Australian legal practitioner and eligibility to hold an ACT practising certificate.
  • Substantial experience in legal practice, professional responsibility, regulatory, ethics or professional standards work.
  • Sound knowledge of the Solicitors Conduct Rules and legal profession regulatory framework.
  • Strong legal research and analytical skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • The ability to translate complex legal and ethical issues into clear, practical guidance.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build trusted relationships with practitioners across a wide range of practice settings.
  • Sound judgment, professionalism and discretion when dealing with sensitive matters.

The ACT Law Society is the peak professional body representing and maintaining standards of solicitors in the Australian Capital Territory. As part of our strategic shift, we’re bringing our investigations and litigation functions in-house for the first time.

The Opportunity

Reporting to the Principal Lawyer, Investigations and Litigation, and working with the Senior Lawyer, you will assist with and have conduct of investigations into disciplinary, suitability and litigated matters under the Legal Profession Act 2006 (ACT). You will assist in preparing advice to the Society’s Council and delegated committees and represent the Society in mediations and before the ACAT and ACT Supreme Court.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with and conduct investigations into complaints about and suitability matters relating to legal practitioners under the Legal Profession Act 2006 (ACT)
  • Engage with complainants, practitioners, counsel and third parties through clear, professional communication
  • Prepare legal advice and briefing notes for Council and delegated committees on investigations, disciplinary, suitability and litigated matters in a timely manner
  • Assist with the applications in the ACT Civil and Administrative Tribunal and appear on behalf of the Society, or brief and liaise with external counsel or legal representation as required
  • Contribute to the development of internal policies, procedures and guidelines
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives, sharing knowledge with other teams to support education programs and resources promoting ethical and professional legal practice

What You’ll Bring

  • Admission as solicitor of an Australian Supreme Court with a current practising certificate (or eligibility to obtain one)
  • Ideally, at least 1 year PQE with demonstrated litigation and advocacy experience
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving abilities, with experience in interpreting legislation, case law and regulatory rules
  • Demonstrated sound judgment in assessing and resolving factual and legal issues
  • Ability to quickly master new and evolving areas of law
  • Demonstrated attention to detail and organisation in maintaining accurate records.
  • Experience in regulatory, disciplinary or complaint-handling environments (highly desirable)
  • Sound understanding of administrative law principles and best practices (desirable)
