Meet our new President and Council
The ACT Law Society has a new President, with Tim Dingwall elected to the position for 2023-24 after serving four years on the Council.
Tim’s election, along with that of the new Council of the Law Society, was announced at the Society’s annual general meeting on Thursday 21 September 2023.
He was first elected to the Council in 2019 and served as Vice-President for the past year.
Tim has identified three priorities as President, which include working with the Chief Executive Officer and Council to review and modernise the Society’s governance.
He also intends to focus on the issues affecting the Society’s members, and on upholding the standards of conduct and integrity which maintains the trusted reputation the legal profession has in the community.
A partner at Griffin Legal, where he provides legal services to the not-for-profit, government and business sectors, Tim is a trusted adviser in Canberra’s charity sector.
He regularly provides pro bono advice, including to YWCA Canberra and its Rentwell program, which is designed to tackle women’s homelessness.
“I am driven by commitment to making clients’ lives easier, and by being there to help in difficult situations, and just doing a good job,” he said.
Tim was born and raised in Canberra and is a graduate of the University of Canberra Law School.
Having worked in a variety of other fields, from IT consulting to bartending, he came to the law later in life, eventually deciding to follow in his father’s footsteps.
“The past is knowledge. It’s never too late to change,” he said. “Some of the most capable and passionate lawyers I have met have had other lives before law.”
The Society also has two new Vice-Presidents for the forthcoming year, with Lisa Quilty and Georgia Briggs elected to those roles after previous terms on the Council.
Law Society Chief Executive Officer Simone Carton thanked the outgoing Council, including former President Farzana Choudhury, for their tireless work and support over the past year.
