In this presentation, John introduced findings from the National Elder Abuse Research Program, including from the National Elder Abuse Prevalence Study and the Evaluation of the National Plan to Respond to the Abuse of Older Australians. In addition to discussing data relating to the nature and prevalence of the five key forms of elder abuse examined in the prevalence study, John presented findings relating to legal arrangements, including Wills, Powers Of Attorney and family agreements.

RESEARCH FELLOW, FAMILY LAW, FAMILY VIOLENCE AND ELDER ABUSE RESEARCH PROGRAM

John De Maio is a researcher who joined the Institute in 2008, to work on the Evaluation of the 2006 Family Law Reforms. His research has focused on family law and family transitions. He has also been involved in evaluating family law programs aiming to improve collaboration between family law service organisations and assist parents resolve their post-separation parenting arrangements where there has been an alleged experience of family violence. Between 2013 and 2018, he undertook research examining the settlement experiences of recent humanitarian migrants in the Longitudinal Study of Humanitarian Migrants. He is currently involved in research describing the understanding and awareness of elder abuse and attitudes towards older people. Prior to joining AIFS, John worked at the Institute for Child Health Research where his research investigated the health, education and wellbeing of Aboriginal children and families.
