  • Who can make a power of attorney – what is a solicitor's role in determining whether someone has capacity to make an Enduring Power of Attorney?
  • Why make an Enduring Power of Attorney and what happens if you do not make an Enduring Power of Attorney?

Join Katrina Musgrove and Kate Martin to learn Court Etiquette Basics and master the art of courtroom decorum. Discover why etiquette and civility are paramount, what the court expects from you, and the crucial steps of proceedings. Learn key skills for new lawyers, appropriate attire, and how to interact with court staff. From entering the courtroom to addressing the court and opponents, we'll cover it all—including how to prepare for court, handle common issues, and advocate effectively for your client.

Power of Attorney Basics

Lauren Babic, Thomson Geer

Lauren's practice comprises estate and succession law, and elder law.  Lauren works closely with clients to ensure they have an effective estate plan where she drafts Wills, testamentary trusts, special disability trusts, Enduring Powers of Attorney and Superannuation Death Benefit Nominations to reflect clients’ unique circumstances. She administers estates and secures Grants of Probate across the ACT, NSW, and Victorian jurisdictions. Lauren also acts in various dispute matters including family provision claims, claims in relation to the validity of wills and equitable claims.

 

Court Etiquette Basics

Katrina Musgrove

Barrister -LLM, LLB (1ST CLASS HONS), BHOSP

Katrina was called to the Bar in 2016. Her areas of practice include criminal law, coronial inquests and inquiries, Royal Commissions, care and protection proceedings, professional discipline, administrative law and judicial review. Katrina’s legal background is as a criminal prosecutor for the Commonwealth and ACT DPP. She has appeared in a wide range of matters including jury trials, appeals, sentences and bail applications before the ACT Supreme Court and NSW District Court. She also has extensive hearing experience in the lower courts and tribunals, and is a member of the NSW Legal Aid indictable criminal law barrister panel. Katrina’s areas of practice include administrative and judicial review, care and protection, coronial law, criminal law, planning law, professional discipline and royal commissions. 

Katrina is passionate about effective and persuasive advocacy, which starts well before you enter the courtroom. As a highly experienced advocate, Katrina is well placed to provide helpful insight to new practitioners on courtroom etiquette and advocacy.

Kate Martin

Kate was admitted to practice in 2021. She is currently a solicitor at Moray and Agnew, practising in insurance litigation. Prior to being admitted Kate was the associate to Justice Mossop and then to Associate Justice McWilliam (as her Honour then was) of the ACT Supreme Court.

In her practice Kate appears regularly in the ACT Courts before Registrars, Magistrates and Judges. She also serves as a member of the ACT Law Society’s New Lawyers Committee.
