Law Week raises $7000 for OzHarvest

Activities in Canberra during Law Week 2011 raised more than $7,000 for OzHarvest. This included funds raised by Canberra lawyers and a contribution by the 2011 Law Week major sponsor, LawCover.

OzHarvest was founded in 2004 and is a non-denominational charity that rescues excess food which would be otherwise discarded. The excess food is distributed to charities supporting the vulnerable in Canberra, Sydney, Newcastle and Adelaide.

One of the Law Week highlights was the launch lunch and great debate featuring Dr Andrew Leigh MP, Senator Gary Humphries, Professor Maree Sainsbury (University of Canberra), Warwick Hadfield (ABC Radio), Law Society Councillor Sarah Avery and Adam Bak (both of whom are prominent young lawyers in the Canberra community).

By far the most popular and profitable event was the renowned Law Week Quiz Night, at which approximately 220 lawyers and their friends gathered in the Canberra Club to test their wits against a barrage of general knowledge and popular culture questions.

The amount raised for OzHarvest is a credit to our small but active jurisdiction. It is also a sign that the legal profession’s community spirit, camaraderie and willingness to help are alive and doing well in Canberra. A cheque will be presented to OzHarvest’s Canberra Manager, Dave Burnet, during the Society’s July Members’ Lunch today.
