Law Society welcomes new ACT Magistrates

The President of the ACT Law Society, Chris Donohue, today welcomed the appointment of local barristers James Lawton and James Stewart to the bench of the ACT Magistrates Court as full-time and part-time Magistrates, respectively.

"The Law Society is very pleased to see two local Canberra practitioners appointed to the ACT Magistrates Court,” said Mr Donohue. "Mr Lawton has been practising in criminal law since 1998, and brings to the bench a broad experience across ACT Legal Aid, the ACT DPP, the RAAF, and the Bar.

"Mr Stewart also has a military background, holding the rank of Major, and has worked for both the South Australian and NSW DPP, as well as teaching legal practice skills at the ANU.

"The Law Society, on behalf of the ACT legal profession, welcomes the appointment of Magistrates Lawton and Stewart."
