A Modern Practice Approach to Ethics in Legal Practice

Our regulatory duties provide solicitors must act ethically, deliver legal services competently, and avoid any compromise to a solicitor’s integrity and professional independence. 

 This session will cover how we can use modern legal practices to manage our ethical duties as solicitors. 

  1. The regulatory obligation to identify and respond to ethical issues in legal practice and maintain solicitor integrity and independence 
  2. The role of trauma informed practice to discharge our solicitor duties
  3. The role of moral injury in compromising solicitor’s integrity and how to manage this

This session is quite interactive and it is recommended to attend in person.

Claudia is the Director of Yellow Legal, a modern family law firm designed for impact, and former Principal Solicitor of the Women’s Legal Centre ACT. She is also the founder of TILCO – the Trauma Informed Law Collective, a community of professionals working in human-centred areas of law. Claudia has an MBA from University of NSW, a Masters of Applied Law (Family), and has delivered workshops in trauma informed practice to Commonwealth and ACT Government, Melbourne University Law School, and top tier and boutique firms. In 2022, she was awarded the ACT Law Society’s President’s Medal for her work in developing trauma-informed organisations in the community legal sector and the UNSW AGSM Scholarship to extend her work in developing human-centred legal services.

Rhiân is Principal Consultant and CEO at Rhiân Williams & Associates. Rhiân supports individuals, groups, organisations and governments to collaborate to deliver meaningful change. Rhiân has developed trauma informed training programs that have been accredited by the Royal Australian College of General Practice and the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine. Rhiân has consulted on the implementation of trauma-informed approaches to a diverse range of organisations such as the Women’s Legal Centre ACT, the South Australian Aboriginal Legal Rights Movement, Australian Women in Agriculture, the Disability Advocacy Network of Australia, Inclusion Australia, the Victorian Legal Ombudsman, Queensland Department of Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Policy & Development, the Federal Court of Australia and the Commonwealth Department of Defence.

  • Tips and tricks to utilise when making/defending family provision claims against an estate in the ACT

Perry has broad experience in all aspects of estates, including estate planning, probate and administration, estate litigation and estate disputes. He enjoys working with his clients to navigate complex estates processes by providing practical solutions and communicating in a straightforward and pragmatic way. Perry's main area of practice is advising clients in estate disputes and litigation, including family provision claims, with a view to resolving matters quickly and effectively. Perry holds a Masters of Applied Law (majoring in wills and estates), was listed as a Doyle's Guide Rising Star in Estates (NSW and ACT) in 2023, and is an active member of the Elder Law & Succession Law Committee.

ACT Government Affordable Housing Land Tax Exemption Scheme

The ACT Government is committed to improving housing affordability and choice in Canberra to meet the needs of our growing city. One of the ways the Government is doing this is by offering a land tax exemption for property owners who rent out their property at an affordable rate (less than 75% of market rent) through a registered community housing provider. Join representatives from the ACT Government, and registered community housing providers – HomeGround and Rentwell – who will provide an overview about the scheme. This session is quite interactive and it is recommended to attend in person. 

AFFORDABLE HOUSING POLICY COORDINATION TEAM

The ACT Government’s Affordable Housing Policy Coordination team delivers on the Government’s ambitious affordable housing agenda. The team works collaboratively with key stakeholders within and external to Government on initiatives aimed at growing the stock of affordable housing and to strengthen and grow the community housing sector in the ACT. The team also provides support to the Coordinator General for Housing to ensure that all activities associated with land supply and residential development are working in a coordinated and effective manner.

Event registration terms and conditions

ACT Law Society invoices have payment terms of 14 days. Fees are payable upon registration. A 1.2% surcharge may be incurred on payments processed via credit/debit card. The Society reserves the right to cancel or alter events at its discretion, and in such circumstances, attendees will be notified via email. 

Definitions — 'Registration' means any booking given to the Society in writing, on our website, or by phone. 'Member' means any member of the ACT Law Society, including associate members and honorary members. 'New Lawyer' means any member who has held a practising certificate for five years or less. 'CLC' means any member working for a recognised community legal centre, or holding a volunteer practising certificate. 'Student' means any member holding a student membership.

All cancellations must be made in writing, and all cancellations will incur a fee, however, no charge will be incurred for substituting another person. Outside of the cancellation periods given below, a $10 administration fee will be incurred for any cancellation made. If a registered attendee fails to attend without notifying the Society in writing, no credit or refund will be offered and 100% of the total cost will be retained by the Society. 

CPD Events — In the case of CPD events held at an venue other than the Law Society, no refund can be made after the RSVP date of the event. In the case of CPD events held at the Law Society, for cancellations made up to two working days prior to the event, 50% of the total cost will be retained by the Society as a cancellation fee and the balance may be used as a credit towards other CPD events or be refunded. If you choose to keep a credit it will remain valid for 12 months from the event date, after which time it will expire. For cancellations within two working days of the event, no refunds or credits will be applicable. 

Webinars — In the case of live or on-demand webinars, as connection details are sent when registration is completed, no refund or cancellation is available. 

Social events — In the case of social events, no refund can be made after the RSVP date of the event.

Attendees of events consent to filming, photography and sound recording as members of the audience. By registering and attending this event you agree to being filmed or photographed which may be used for marketing or promotional purposes
