Emerging Lawyers Webinar Series: Exploring Careers in Law!
Carys Atkinson (Co-chair of New Lawyer committee) , Caroline Atkins (Partner, Maddocks) and Kieran Parkinson (4th Year Law student and ACT Law Society Research Officer) discuss their own personal career trajectory in the legal field.
Carys Atkinson
Senior Solicitor, ACT Government Solicitor
Carys was admitted in October 2020 and is the co-chair of the New Lawyers committee.
Carys started her legal career as a paralegal within the community legal space before transitioning into a government graduate program as a legal policy officer. At the end of her graduate program, Carys moved from legal policy into practicing with the ACT Government Solicitor. While with the ACT Government Solicitor, Carys has worked across a number of different areas including civil litigation, public and constitutional law, and practice coordination. Last year Carys was also a solicitor assisting the Board of Inquiry into the Criminal Justice System.
Caroline Atkins
Partner, Maddocks
Caroline is the partner in the Public Law team at Maddocks and specialises in government technology and policy implementation projects. She is known for her experience and expertise working with the Commonwealth Government, having advised on a wide range of major Commonwealth projects.
Caroline started her career in a small firm in Hobart. She was admitted to practice in 1984, so has substantial experience in working in the legal profession and related jobs (eg as a research officer in Parliament House). Her career includes 10 years in the APS (in various agencies) but also some time spent in larger firms, such as Freehills and Ashurst, a global firm (DLA Piper) and now Maddocks. Caroline has had broad experience as a lawyer, from being a graduate to working her way up through the ranks. She has seen the profession change over the decades, including in attitudes to women and diversity, working arrangements, parenting and the general approach to working with clients (as well as significant developments in technology!). While Caroline’s focus has always been commercial and government law, she has worked in other areas too including property law, family law and criminal law (short periods only). Living in Canberra without family support, she has experience in dealing with family responsibilities, as well looking for career development and taking on leadership roles with some of the firms she has worked with.
