2026 John Koowarta Reconciliation Law Scholarship
Applications open for the 2026 John Koowarta Reconciliation Law Scholarship
Applications are now open for the 2026 John Koowarta Reconciliation Law Scholarship. This prestigious award supports the academic and professional development of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander law students across Australia.
The scholarship, valued at $9,000, is available to students in their penultimate or final year of legal studies at an Australian tertiary institution. In addition to financial assistance, recipients will be offered mentorship opportunities with experienced legal professionals, fostering valuable connections and guidance as they prepare to enter the profession.
Established in 1994, the scholarship honours the legacy of John Koowarta, a member of the Winychanam community at Aurukun and a traditional owner of the Archer River region in Cape York. Mr Koowarta played a pivotal role in advancing Aboriginal land rights and is recognised as a foundational figure in the development of Native Title law in Australia.
The Law Council of Australia encourages all eligible students to apply and invites members of the legal profession to promote this opportunity within their networks. Supporting the next generation of Indigenous legal professionals is a vital step toward a more inclusive and representative legal system.
Applications close on Friday, 8 August 2025.
